Holiday Party Benefits Children’s Museum

December 28, 2008 — (Sioux City, IA) Members of Siouxland Friends & Neighbors (SFN) played Santa this year in helping a new non-profit organization get off to a smart start. This year, the organization named the Children’s Museum of Siouxland as the recipient of their annual Holiday Dinner Fundraiser. Siouxland Friends and Neighbors raised $4000 during the event.

The new children’s museum, with plans to open in 2010, has earmarked the funds to help pay for a feasibility study to be held in the Spring of 2009. “We have done a great deal of research, and plan to start out 2009 with a study to gauge the level of financial support we can expect from the community. This way, we can build an organization that will not only be beneficial to the community but one that will be financially sound,” said Lily Higman, a Founding Board Member of the Children’s Museum of Siouxland.

“We’re thrilled to have raised $4,000 for the Children’s Museum of Siouxland. We’ve long been supporters of their efforts and vision and we’re pleased that our donation will give them a promising start. The sooner we have a Children’s Museum in Siouxland, the better,” said Melanie Swain, President, Siouxland Friends & Neighbors.

Siouxland Friends & Neighbors is a women’s welcoming and charitable group based in North Sioux City, SD. Membership is open to women across Siouxland; newcomers and lifelong residents are equally welcome! They are comprised of women with diverse interests looking for opportunities to meet new people, discover fun places, and experience unique adventures around Siouxland.

The purpose of the Children’s Museum of Sioux City is to provide an interactive learning environment that will serve the needs of our children, families, schools and community.  Through hands-on participatory exhibits and innovative programs, the museum will seek to foster imagination and creativity while inspiring life-long learning.

President’s Message

The Siouxland Friends and Neighbors motto, “Bloom Where You Are Planted”, is what initially attracted me to this organization. My husband’s career “planted” us here, we’d just had our first child and I wanted very much for our family to “bloom” here. Blooming however, whether figuratively or literally, requires roots. Siouxland Friends & Neighbors helps us establish roots by providing opportunities to form personal relationships as well as opportunities to invest in our community.

When I first heard about Siouxland Friends and Neighbors I was actually a little thrown by the charitable aspect of the group; it seemed superfluous. But over the years I’ve come to eagerly anticipate the charity section of each newsletter and now understand how vital investing in my community is to my ability to feel connected and “rooted” here. We try to introduce our membership to new non-profit organizations each year through our monthly monetary donations, our volunteer efforts and our annual holiday dinner fundraiser. We may not all be in a position to give individually, but when we combine our resources, time & talents we can really make an impact. Please know that simply by paying your SFN dues and being a participating member in our organization, your impact is already being felt in our community.

Our membership is 100+ women strong this year. I encourage each of you to join together again to make an impact this November 20th at our holiday dinner fundraiser. The proceeds from the auctions & raffle will benefit the up & coming Children’s Museum of Siouxland (http://www.childrensmuseumofsiouxland.org). We’ll also be collecting supplies for the Sioux City Ronald McDonald House that night (http://www.ronaldhouse-Siouxcity.com/donations/wishlist.htm ), So bring your contributions to the dinner. You can find all this information, and more, on our website;http://SiouxlandFriendsandNeighbors.com – I look forward to seeing you at the Dakota Dunes Country Club on Thursday, November 20th!!
